Why look for assisted living in Nevada?

The population in Nevada has skyrocketed over the last half century, reaching 3+ million residents and just about surpassing Utah (which has also been rapidly growing). Over 640,000 of these residents are located in Las Vegas, the state’s biggest city which also houses a large number of retirees. Nevada is popular for the entertainment and gambling Mecca known as Las Vegas, as well as its smaller siblings Reno and Lake Tahoe which provide similar types of entertainment much of which is geared toward retirees.

For this reason, many older adults prefer to live in Nevada but it’s clearly not the only reason.

Nevada also has year-round mild weather. The low humidity is a nice alternative to Florida, which is similarity mild yet extraordinarily humid.

The state is also cheaper than neighboring California for senior housing costs, and is very tax-friendly to seniors thanks to all the revenue generated from tourism and gambling.

Types of Assisted Living Available in Nevada

According to the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH), the state has a wide variety of assisted living facilities.

It offers everything from small senior residential institutions that are separate from a hospital but can provide quick nursing care service, to more typical assisted living centers in apartment-style complexes that also provide a community area for socializing and meals.

Please contact each individual provider for more information about the facility as well as how the HCBS Waiver (more information, below) can help cover assisted living costs.

Paying for Assisted Living in Nevada

Nevada is known to cover “augmented personal care”, a fancy term for assisted living, through the HCBS Waiver. The WIN Waiver is also available for disabled adults seeking more comprehensive and permanent senior housing.

Sadly, two former waivers were also dedicated to provide financial aid for assisted living yet are now defunct. Yet, with lower state taxes and affordable senior housing, Nevada is still a very affordable place for seniors.
